American Eagle Foundation

Dedicated to saving and protecting the USA's national symbol, the threatened Bald Eagle, through supporting and conducting eagle and environmental care, recovery, monitoring and public education programs nationwide.

Why do we exist?

The National Foundation to Protect America's Eagles was founded to save and protect America's magnificent National Symbol, the Bald Eagle, which was a seriously endangered species.   Our work addresses not only America's eagles and other birds of prey, but also the critical wild habitats that must be preserved so that the species can survive.

What have you accomplished?

The National Foundation to Protect America's Eagles cares for and possesses eagles and other birds of prey for educational, rehabilitation, exhibition, breeding and release purposes.  We breed non-releasable adult eagles and release the eaglets they hatch into the wild.  The Foundation presently has six breeding pairs of non-releasable permanently disabled Bald Eagles, and our staff has successfully released 44 eagle chicks into the wilds of the Great Smoky Mountains area during the past six years.  We also finish raising and release eagle chicks that are born in major zoos, and overall we have been a party to releasing more than 200 bald eaglets in the State of Tennessee in cooperation with the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency since our founding in 1985.

Our work also includes rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned or injured eagles.  The Foundation's "Eagle Mountain Sanctuary" at the Dollywood entertainment park in Pigeon Forge, TN, houses America's largest assembly of non-releasable bald eagles in a large forested outdoor aviary that re-creates the birds' natural habitat.  The NFPAE also operates a "Wings of America" birds of prey show at the Dollywood park.  The Foundation also provides a traveling raptor education program that visits schools, state parks and special events throughout the country.  NFPAE's staff currently cares for a total of 35 bald and golden eagles daily at our Dollywood facility.  The National Foundation to Protect America's Eagles carries out  diverse youth and adult education activities nationwide, including a national Earth Day publication and program for schools.  The Foundation's work has helped to move the Bald Eagle from the "endangered" species list to the "threatened" species list -- and will hopefully result in the Bald Eagle's upgrade to non-threatened status by the year 2001.
