New Directions, Inc.

Licensed residential substance abuse and mental health treatment program for homeless men and women veterans. Provides job training, placement, parenting and family reintegration classes. Serves 800 veterans a year.

Why do we exist?

New Directions exists to provide services and support to homeless veterans with co-occurring disorders.  These services include drug and alcohol detoxification and rehabilitation, mental health treatment, food, clothing, shelter, job training, and help in finding permanent housing.  This nonprofit agency is unique because it was founded by formerly homeless Vietnam veterans, and has developed an effective model of “veterans helping veterans.”  As large numbers of troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, these young veterans will need assistance and compassion as they reintegrate into the civilian world.  New Directions’ individualized treatment methods enable the agency to provide comprehensive, holistic services to veterans of all ages and backgrounds.

What have you accomplished?

New Directions began operations in 1992, providing food, shelter and counseling to veterans in an 8-person home.   Currently, NDI assists more than 800 veterans each year, offers a comprehensive array of services, and partners with numerous government and nonprofit agencies.  New Directions now operates six different facilities in Los Angeles County, and the organization has helped an estimated 30,000 veterans since it was founded.
